All over the world, cities are installing Solar Powered Transit Shelters. They are exemplary of the safe, viable and appealing role that Renewable Energy Solutions can and do play in public transportation.
In numerous locations shelters are now utilising solar powered lighting systems to reduce the amount of grid-energy used to provide safe and well-lit waiting areas for passengers.
This is dramatically improving the flexibility of the placement of shelters into areas not necessarily easily accessible to mainstream power grids.
Solar Transit Shelters are part of the effort to “green” transportation, along with green buildings, around the globe for railways, buses and even on the high seas. Solar electricity is having an impact at transit stops where there are three major concerns:
All of these issues are easily alleviated by intelligent solar powered AUS-E® Transit Shelters.
In addition to solar powered LED lighting systems to illuminate shelters for night time travellers security, solar power is additionally being used to backlight outdoor advertising displays.
Using specifically designed optics, our LED lighting provides high-quality overall vibrant and high-definition uniform coloured displays. The system combines a proprietary Solar Control Unit and customized LED lighting modules with efficient solar panels and intelligent battery storage to deliver autonomous, reliable and cost effective solar lighting solutions in the transit sector.
Combined with intelligent storage, lighting for passenger safety and backlit outdoor advertising, the shelter's design also provides for live transit information via WiFi; all supported on a stand-alone off-grid site.
Solar Transit Shelters not only provide demonstrated functionality, performance and the aesthetics of PV glass, but represents an important application innovation to the use of Clean Energy.
New solar photovoltaic Transit Shelters, equipped with solar PV glazing will generate up to 2,000 kilowatt-hours (kWh) of electricity a year.
In one high-profile example is in San Francisco, where the city opened the first of 1,200 new bus shelters. At least one-third of them will be powered by solar panels on the shelters' roofs.
These panels will power lighting, LED arrival-time displays and push-button loudspeakers for visually impaired riders. The San Francisco shelters will also be grid-connected with excess power fed back into the local energy grid.
Using solar PV glazing in charging canopies such as our Transit Shelters, Intelligent Solar Trees, Solar Walkways, Solar Shade Structures and "Off-Grid" Rapid Charge Vehicle Recharging Stations is set to have a significant impact on our world's emissions, without compromising our environment, architecture or budgets.
